Summarising the World Cup 2022 Final
26 Dec 2022
The Football World Cup 2022 has ended following the tense final between defending Champions France and Messi’s Argentina. Today we will summarise the match and explain some controversial VAR/Referee decisions. Hours before the final started there were rumors about a virus spreading through the France Squad with many reports informing us that Raphael Varane, Kingsley Coman, and Ibrahima Konaté were socially distancing themselves from the rest of the teammates but the Frenchmen were seen playing in the match vs Argentina in the final.
Early in the game, Argentina received a penalty following Ousmane Dembele’s challenge on Di Maria. It seems that there is no solid physical contact other than a small accidental touch on Di Maria’s foot but according to FIFA’s laws that would be a penalty but if it was a DOGSO then Dembele should have been booked but it seems that the referee made the right decision.
Moving on to the decision of stopping France’s Counterattack after a bad tackle on Coman, he got up to complete the counter attack. The whistle was blown where the advantage should have been played. That would have been the last play of normal time with 27 seconds left. The referee later admitted his mistake while talking to the press.
“Of course, there were mistakes in this final. I interrupted the French counter-attack after a bad tackle by Marcos Acuna,” he told Sport. “I was afraid that the fouled player wanted to unwind, and I read it wrong because nothing happened. You could give an advantage and then return with a card. It’s hard. In a game like this, I take such a mistake in the dark. The important thing is that there were no big mistakes,” he added.
The last controversy was whether Upamecano passed to Mbappe with a handball or a header. After watching the replay many times it seems to be a header by Upamecano.
